Deputy Director at Probation Department, County of Santa Clara

Mariel Caballero has worked in politics and public policy for over fifteen years. In October 2017, Mariel became the first Deputy Director of Probation Administration overseeing the Contracts & Grants, Research & Development, Evidence Based Practices, the Neighborhood Safety Unit, and the Juvenile Violence Reduction Program, as well as serving as the department PIO. In May 2013, Mariel became a Program Manager for the Probation Department’s Juvenile Services Division developing and implementing a Violence Reduction Program. Mariel was the Senior Management Analyst for the Office of Public Defender implementing new services, tracking office performance and interacting with the Board of Supervisors, community groups and non-profits from 2008-2013. She served for three years on the staff of Congressman Mike Honda and three years on the staff of Santa Clara County Supervisor Blanca Alvarado. She has experience working with legislative issues related to education, international affairs, and public safety and justice.

In October 2019, Mariel was appointed to the San Jose Planning Commission and the Advisory Board of Santa Clara University’s Ignatian Center. Mariel served for six years on the Board of Directors of the Latina Coalition of Silicon Valley, a local non-profit that strives to educate Latinas in the area of civic engagement. Mariel served on the East Side Union High School District Citizen’s Bond Oversight Committee for four years.

Mariel earned her Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Santa Clara University in 2002 and a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Golden Gate University in 2010. She was also awarded a certificate of completion for the Senior Executives in State & Local Government Program, June 2019, from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, Executive Education.
